Skin Check
According to the Cancer Council, Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the developed world. This is mostly due to the country’s climate and proximity to the equator, which means UV levels are high. Many Australians also have fair skin that isn’t suited to such harsh conditions, making them more at risk of developing skin cancer as they age.
There are three main types of skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma), the majority of which are caused by exposure to UV radiation in sunlight. Melanoma, which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, afflicts Australians more than residents of Canada, the US, and the UK. Sunburn, tanning, and solariums are some factors that increase the risk of skin cancer in adults.
As such, it is important to get a regular skin check at Erina Skin Cancer Clinic.
Comprehensive Skin Check
We understand that getting a skin check can seem like a daunting process. But we encourage our patients to do an initial skin check at home and take note of any spots of concern. Skin cancer can develop all over the body, including one’s intimate areas, so please look at your skin, private areas, and scalp.
Please do not wear any makeup, artificial tanner or nail polish to your appointment so our skin doctors can have a clear and unobstructed view of your skin. Dry skin can make your spots harder to examine, so we recommend maintaining a daily moisturiser routine in the weeks prior to your appointment.
Our doctors will conduct the skin check within 10-30 minutes, depending on your skin history. You can expect our specialists to start with an assessment of your skin cancer risk and a review of your general medical history, including your family history and any medication you’re taking. Apart from discussing your skin type with our doctors, you will also be asked to point out any areas of concern.
Your Trusted Skin Check Clinic
Erina Skin Cancer Clinic houses a team of skin experts dedicated to the successful treatment of skin cancer. We streamline our skin checks with the guidance of our highly competent doctors who specialise in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of different skin cancer types. Each of our doctors has an exam process, but generally, each part of your skin will be examined with a dermatoscope.
We will let you know if any further follow-up is required, and when you should book your next appointment. The timeframe varies depending on your skin type and risk factors. We will also provide some tips on how to protect your skin while waiting for your next check-up.
If any of our doctors find a suspicious spot on your skin, they may have to take images and request a review to investigate if any changes have occurred over time. They may also have to perform a biopsy.
