Chronic Pain: All You Need to Know

That headache you get when you don’t have enough sleep or the pain you feel when you stub your toe is normal. It is a way for your body to tell you something is wrong or that there has been damage to your tissues. But if the pain persists and interferes with your life, it is time to seek medical attention.
The discomfort that lasts for months or even years is referred to as chronic pain. Let’s talk more about that in this blog.
What Is Chronic Pain?
While acute pain happens when you get hurt or have an injury, chronic pain persists even after recovering from an illness or injury. It may be “on and off” or continuous, and sometimes, it occurs for no obvious reason.
Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical support. In fact, an estimated 25% of adults have experienced chronic pain in the United States.
Causes of Chronic Pain
Chronic pain can be due to various reasons—sometimes psychological, sometimes an underlying illness. To be specific, here are some causes of chronic pain:
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sprain
  • Serious or traumatic injuries
  • Cancer
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Psychological factors (stress, anxiety, depression)
According to those who have experienced chronic pain, it feels like either of the following:
  • Burning
  • Throbbing
  • Shooting
  • Stiffness
  • Stinging
  • Squeezing
Chronic Pain Management
Identifying the main cause of your pain is crucial in finding permanent relief. But sometimes, you may need temporary solutions to make the aching bearable. Here are some ways to chronic pain management:
1. Meditate
Endorphins are considered “feel-good” chemicals because they have properties that can help you feel better. Plus, this hormone serves as your body’s natural painkiller.
Relaxation and meditation can help boost endorphins, making them one of the most effective ways to manage chronic pain. Moreover, it can ease muscle tension and spasms. You may follow deep breathing techniques or do calming activities to ease the pain.
2. Medicate
Although it is not good to depend on medications to relieve pain, it is sometimes the easiest way to feel better and break free from discomfort. For mild pains, you can take over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Doctors may also prescribe you drugs that specifically target your condition.
You have to remember, though, that pain relievers are just one part of a comprehensive treatment plan for chronic pain.
3. De-Stress
Your emotions can also affect your body’s sensitivity to pain. That said, strong negative feelings like sadness, stress, and anxiety can contribute to the pain you’re feeling.
Stay away from stressful environments and situations as much as possible. You may refer to this list of things you can do to take control of your stress:
  • Be more active
  • Practice self-care
  • Read your favourite book or watch a movie you love
  • Do relaxation and breathing exercises
  • Talk to a support person
  • Spend time on a hobby
  • Most importantly, do what makes you happy
